Essay 1

In the past people wore their traditional clothes and follow their culture. These days most people wear similar clothes and therefore look very similar to one another .Do you think this is a positive or a negative development?

It is irrefutable fact that every person nurtures an innate desire of looking good and accepted in the socioeconomic circle. Fashion has been cherished by humans since the ancient times but has undergone changes with time. Nowadays, wearing traditional attires suggests that culture is lagging behind because youth has embraced a distinct fashion to associate itself with a certain social group. I side with those think that this is a positive sign of development.

To begin with it is often said that "Change Is the Spice of Life", hence the way of dressing should change, which is necessary to keep life interesting because in my view people do not neglect their own cultural identity by wearing clothes which are similar but instead they express their appreciation for what ever looks good on them whether it relates to their culture or not. For example wearing jeans is universally popular, though they first originated in western countries but people in every country wear them because they are comfortable and they look good on the wearer and in doing so they can not be said to neglecting their culture.

Furthermore, in the present day scenario, dressing does not necessarily mean glamour, or the urge to follow the current trends rather I think It’s a way of life and a reflection of inner beauty since its innate desire of every one to look and feel good and clothes are important aspect in fulfilling of this wish such as wearing a nice dress or clothes which are popular world wide would take one closer to their desire of looking good and beautiful.

Yet another charm of present day outfits is that they are inexpensive and faster to put on than traditional dress as this aspect is extremely important and vital to keep up with the fast pace of life where time is precious for instance in Indian culture wearing traditional Saree is time consuming while modern dresses could be worn in fraction of the time it takes one to wear saree.

To cap it all, despite traditional costumes being less frequently worn, I strongly believe that new trend of similar clothing brings people closer and with less prejudice against origin and status of other civilizations which is good development for uniting the complete humanity on our planet.

Essay 2

Some people believe that visitors to other countries should follow local customs and behaviour; others disagree and think that the host country should welcome cultural differences. Discuss both the views and give your own opinion.

Inter country travel has exploded in the past few years and ever increasing number of people are travelling internationally and this trend has evoked mixed reaction wherein certain people believe that visitors should adhere to local customs when staying in a foreign country while others opine that the host country should be expected to show some openness and tolerance towards visitors' behavior being different from local habits. In my view, both views have some merit and should be explored further.

It is human tendency to jaunt other cultures and then the question to espouse one’s culture arises, I think each and every person has the right as a human to follow what his or her rational urges but this right itself holds some rational boundaries. Culture has the same characteristics as of water, if water is flowing it remains clean and turbidity does not victimize it. Identical tenets are true in the case of culture because if it is not lively and happening, it will vanish with passage of time.

Nowadays, globalization and tourism have heavily impacted local customs and traditions so differences between many countries have been evened out. Therefore, it could be vital for the survival of local customs that visitors respect them in addition, travelers are more likely to gain insight into a host country and its culture by following local customs.

On the other hand, customs that are destructive, regressive and downgrading in nature must be stopped from persisting. In this manner, culture will be prosperous and eternal. It is particularly true in the case of India where culture is everlasting and since the ancient period to this day, millions of visitors who have visited India, have followed local customs and also lent their customs, that is why India has such a wonderful diversified and unique culture.

In summary, I think visitors should make efforts to adopt their behaviours in a way that does not conflict with local customs to make their stay more enjoyable on the other hand locals should also have some flexibility in their approach towards their customs considering lack of knowledge of visitors.

Essay 3

Today, the high sales of consumer goods reflect the power of advertising and not the real need of the society in which they are sold. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Advertising surrounds us in our everyday life, & advertisers use countless means to catch the customer’s eye, including celebrity appeal, fantasy and plain old creativity. Advertisements create and sustain an ideology of consumption and it is a social force which stimulates the behavior of the buyer to purchase a particular product.

To begin with, advertising, though originally used to market products, now, unfortunately, markets feelings, sensation and life style regardless of usefulness of the product because this mode of communication imposes choices on the public mind through language, celebrities and story telling. For example advertisements targeting teenagers and youth for cola drinks using movie stars and cricket players of our country portraying a cool image of cola drinkers even if the product is unhealthy is clear misuse of advertising for sole benefit of profit.

On the other hand if it was not for advertising, owning and using many useful products would not have been possible because to bring down the cost of production, a certain scale of production is needed by manufacturers and this aim is addressed by use of advertising for example mobile phones which are immensely useful were very expensive when they were introduced but because of aggressive marketing, their market size kept on increasing, eventually bringing down the cost of production and hence making it affordable to large section of public.

To sum up, in my opinion advertisement is a two edged sword that either works for or against the consumer depending upon the particular product in question. The real focus should be to educate the consumer that before jumping in for buy decision , they should carefully evaluate objectively as to whether they actually need the product, can they really afford it and is the product really as useful for them as it claims to be. Once all above questioned are in affirmative, only then consumer should make the buy decision rather than simply getting carried away by the mindless advertisements.

Essay 4

Successful sports professionals can earn a great deal of more money than people in other important professions. Some people think this is fully justified while others think it is unfair. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

There have always been debates regarding the extraordinary high remuneration of various sports professionals. This discussion usually evoked mixed emotions & while some people side with sportspersons getting high monetary benefits, others citing reasons such as equality, importance of job etc. disapprove of such exorbitant payments to sports stars.

To begin with sports professionals represent their nations on an international level and these people work very hard & sacrifice personal lives as they give priority to the nation. Also they prove their genius and are tested persistently because, they bear the pressure of success all the time and expectations of the hundreds of the thousands of people hence it is only fair that they be paid exceptionally well for such feat of talent. For example cricket starts in our country have to work very hard, risk injuries and sacrifice their personal life and face performance pressure all the time , hence more money paid to them is justified

Conversely, there are people of numerous occupations who are paid very less but work hard almost equal to sports stars and jobs performed by them are far more valuable for the society because without support of these people society can not function properly such as jobs of teacher and doctors who have to study and work long but still they are paid a minuscule amount as compared to our star sportspersons.

who also give their hundred percent but are not paid accordingly. As per their opinion, it is the media which grab the glory for these people and has made them celebrities. People like engineers, doctors and scientists hold more responsibilities and their profession starve for more responsibilities. The system which decides the amount of reward becomes biases in this situation. It is not justified as the person who is getting limelight is earning more but at the same time, if the person has done something remarkable is not paid equally.

As per my opinion, it is unjust to pay enormous amount of money to people who grab equal amount of respect, glory and pride of the nation. In the case of sports people, the media has given a great contribution to provide them luxurious life. It is the responsibility of the media to give equal significance to other professionals if they attain the same level of victory.

To cap it all, it is the society which plays a fundamental role in giving more value to sports persons so there are fewer objections if these people are earning more money than others. Just like movie stars, sportsman live extravagant lifestyle with all luxuries.

Essay 5

Many countries spend a lot of money on major sports competitions such as Olympics. Many people think it is better to use that money to encourage children to take up a sport at young age. To what extent do you agree?

This is true that in recent times, many countries are splurging extravagant sums of money on sports competitions and it has led to many people criticizing as to whether such expenditure of public money is justified when there is genuine need to address other pressing public issues such as infrastructure, education and unemployment etc.

Though at the outset it may seem that money spent on sports competitions is wastage of public reserves but it is not accurate reflection of the situation. The truth is when countries undertake to spend money on such competitions it is in the form of upgrading infrastructure such as roads and other related facilities in sports stadiums, this in turn helps to generate employment for the local industry, thus this spending should not be seen as merely wastage of public funds alone. Moreover competitions of such huge magnitude give opportunity to countries to showcase its prowess and provide clout in international matters and respect from other nations.

On the other hand extravagant spending of the public money is not justified either because this precious resource could be used in a better way such as building schools and providing other basic necessities such as clean drinking water etc. Spending huge amount of money for the sake of false pride and showoff is not in public interest hence government before spending money should make careful evaluation of the available resources so as to make informed decision before spending huge sums of money.

To conclude, though it is important to build infrastructure as per the international standards in competitions because not only it is a matter of country’s pride but it also generates revenue because of heavy inflow of international tourists. At the same it should also not be forgotten by the decision makers that such lavish expense just to show off is not justified either when there are other crucial matters of national importance are crying for urgent attention.

Essay 6

The modern invention brings many disadvantage to society, do you agree or disagree?

The evolution in science has picked up pace like never before, now a days we are inundated with the new inventions which promise to be the best so far and make our lives better but at the same time there are quite a few people who argue that new inventions have caused more problems to us by making us totally materialistic in approach with utter disrespect for human values. They opine that these so called new inventions have made the pace of life extremely fast and have not left any leisure time for us to enjoy.

It is undoubtedly true that modern inventions have brought lot of benefits to our society and these inventions have made our lives better, its hard to imagine how life would be without these inventions such as mobile phone and internet which allow us to remain connected with whole world the entire time, the wealth of invaluable information on every conceivable topic is available at the touch of few buttons using internet. It has also allowed little known people to be heard all over the world by integrating social media. These are just a few examples of how well modern inventions have served us and this list is countless. Therefore, it is easy to conclude that modern inventions have served us really very and helped us evolve over these years.

Conversely modern inventions have also brought their own set of problems to us for example because of fast pace of life our lives have become more stressful as pressure to achieve more is takes heavy toll on our life it has brought to the fore many diseases unheard of, furthermore easy availability has made us lazy and aloof as gadgets have taken over the place of leisure time. Also excessive use of social media over internet is waste of time that could have been used for other meaningful activities.

Essay 7

Countries should try to produce all the food and import as little food as possible. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Food is the basic need of everyone and hence is very important commodity for every nation. Insufficient availability of food can make a nation vulnerable to external threats such as high import price, restlessness and insecurity in general public etc., therefore it is generally suggested that countries should produce all the food and import as less as possible. I majorly support the notion of local production of food items instead of depending on imported food and limiting it as much as possible.

First reason in support of local food production is that food productions locally offers a sense of security to nation and safeguards interests of its population because if the food is grown at country level then it does not have to depend upon any other nation for its food needs which may take undue advantage of this situation. Hence a country should try to cater to its food needs at a local level for this reason.

Secondly, if a country produces food, then it will help its economy in the form of employment generation and will also keep food prices under check because government can formulate a policy to regulate the food prices so that they remain affordable for its general population for example India has policy of distributing food at subsidized price to poor people though public distribution system at quite low price. Hence producing food at local level is good for population of a country.

However, in certain situations it may be inevitable to avoid food import such as in cases of draught, flood or any other disaster beyond human control. Hence in these cases it is prudent to import food to tide over the crisis at hand, therefore import of food should be allowed in such situations.

Thus, to conclude, in my view, a nation should import food only if it has no choice, but in general it should try to produce food locally as much as possible.

Essay 8

Many school children and students today are taught to push themselves to try and be better than their classmates, rather than to work together for everyone’s benefit.

Do the advantages of training youg people to be competitive out weigh the diasavantages.

Both competition and cooperation play a large role in the advancement of society, both in business and non-business areas. Competition forces people to improve their products or services hence benefits the recipients of these products or services. Co-operation helps in development of individuals and the society as a whole because it drastically increases the scale of these improvements. Thus, I believe that children should be taught to co-operate more than to compete.

Pushing children rigorously all the time is unfair, as we might kill their innocence and in extreme cases thrust them to the brink of something as drastic as suicide. However, this would not happen if children are taught to co-operate because with co-operation everyone will be treated equal and children will have chance to grow and learn at their own pace. Moreover, we must remember that our most of lives are spent in the company of others such as friends and family, hence due to our need for co-existence, it is desirable to have co-operation.

Conversely, competition is not to be despised because it forces us to do well and helps both children and adults. It propels us to discover new ideas, test new methods etc. For example, competition in any business such as Microsoft and Google would push them to produce new products and services which would benefit consumers. Likewise, in other areas such as sports, competition again is the key for betterment. Therefore, I think it is good idea if children, learn to compete because it would serve as precursor, showing them the way for future.

In conclusion, admittedly, competition cannot be wished away because at some point of time one competes with others, this being the necessity of modern day complex life, however my view is that co-operation is somewhat more effective in helping individuals and societies to develop, because it benefits not only individuals, but also society as a whole, therefore children should be encouraged more to co-operate than to compete with each other.

Essay 9

Some people believe that success in life depends on hard work and determination, while others believe that other factors like money and personal appearance are important. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Success is the valued highly since it gets one respect, financial freedom and sense of freedom but it depends on so many factors that different people have divergent views on how to achieve success. There are some people who think that success is derivative of hard work and determination while others think that money and personal appearance are key factors in swinging success to your side.

To begin with success is a function of hard work and determination to a large extent because world is full of examples of people who have been able to achieve success due to sheer hard work and determination though they had limited resources when they started out. One great example of such extraordinary success is story of Apple computers which started off in a garage of its founder Steve Jobs who had no money but due to his great efforts and determination Apple has become the most valued brand in the world today. Therefore, hard work and determination definitely play a key role in success.

Money also plays an important role in success and without it success would not be possible either. It’s because to carry out any activity whether it is business venture or say awareness campaign about some social cause, money is the foremost requirement. For example if one wants to start a new promising business venture, then he/she must have money to start off the business activity . Hence money is also definitely one of the key requirements for success.

Personal appearance on the other hand though is important for certain professions such as acting and modeling but cannot be said to be a key factor for success for other professions because though having good personal appearance is desirable but except modeling and acting its not a pre requisite for any other profession. For example some of very successful persons such as Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela had hardly great personal appearances but were hugely successful, while same rule would not apply on actors and models for whom personal appearance is everything.

To conclude, I believe that success is a combination of many synergetic activities. But key components that contribute most to the success are hard work, determination and money because without them most of the activities would simply not be possible, on the other hand personal appearance though is desirable but is not a deciding factor in success except for few selected professions such as acting and modeling.

Essay 10

Some people think that it is necessary to travel to other places to learn about other cultures. Others say that books, films and the Internet can be used as a source of information about different cultures. Do you agree or disagree? Give your opinion.

Cultures are quintessential part to our society and in the present day scenario, it has gained even more importance, because ,we are now interacting with people of different cultures even more , due to advancement in communications and our need to conduct business with people from different cultures. There is seeming debate between the people who think that traveling to experience the culture is best way to learn it while others think we should use books, films and internet. In my opinion, both the views have their own merits and should be considered by individuals on his/her requirements.

There is no doubt, that traveling is best way to learn culture first hand because it’s the authentic way to experience it. Also, when a person travels to place of culture he/she is able to experience it directly and learn more about it by simply being more engaged in the whole experience. For example when a person travels Brazil to experience carnival it’s altogether a different experience vis a vis watching it on internet or reading books about it. Therefore, traveling offers more in depth and lasting learning experience.

On the other hand, time is a luxury in this fast paced life and one may not have enough time to travel to the place of culture about which he/she is interested, hence relying on books, internet and films for guidance makes more sense. Furthermore, traveling may involve significant expenses which one may not be able to afford, hence he/she can use books, internet or films which hardly cost anything in comparison to real travel cost. Consequently, learning from non travel sources is advisable and practical solution.

To summarise, I think that if one has the time and money to travel, then undoubtedly this is best way to learn about the other culture but if time and money are a constraint one should use other sources such books, internet and films.

Essay 11

Nowadays more people are living by themselves. What are the reasons for this? Will this have a negative or a positive impact on the society?

Pace of change has quickened in the recent past and as a result of this our social behaviours have also undergone sea change and in the modern world living alone is a trend and not an aberration any more.

There are many reasons as to why people live alone , the first reason is the freedom individual desires , because in the modern world individualism is respected and is shown to be the ideal by our media who name it as empowerment and life without any boundaries.

Second reason is the development of communications technology which blurs the boundaries between real and virtual , for example we are connected with all our friends with social media such as face book, this kind of connections makes us believe that we know all about our friends and family , therefore, disconnection with real world is not actually felt.

In my view, people living individually will have a bad impact on the society, as there are many disadvantages of living alone, first of all people would not have any social support network because they live alone and in case of any help needed by them, it will not be forthcoming, furthermore, it also promotes sadness because as the age advances people begin to feel void and emptiness which can only be filled by other humans, but since they live alone, it increases, and gives rise to loneliness and sadness leading to diseases such as depression etc.

To conclude, I would like to state that we should try be as social as we can because joys of life are to experienced together and if we continue to live alone , a day might come that will damage the entire social structure of our society beyond repair.

Essay 12

Some people view giving presents as an important way to show care to family and friends, others think there are more important things that can be done to show care and appreciation. Do you agree or disagree

We humans being social animals crave for care, love and affection. Everyone wants to be cared and appreciated and to reciprocate we wish to show same level of affection to our fellow beings. But sadly our world has become extremely materialistic and weighs everything in terms of money hence there are many people who think giving presents is only way to show care and endearment. However, in my opinion we can do other things than buying presents to show our fondness and love to our family.

First of all, buying a present signifies quantifying your emotions and are in a way disrespectful because it is improper to weigh emotions in monetary terms, for example if we judge someone’s affection just because they bought us a costly diamond and rank them ahead of the near and dear ones who spend time, make us laugh and share our happiness and sorrows, it will be an insult to their affection, therefore, we must respect and judge people as to how much difference they make in our lives and not just how lavish their gifts are.

Secondly when people buy expensive gifts for their near and dear ones to show affection, usually they are trying to cover their mistakes, for example a parent who has not celebrated his child’s birthday with her, attempts to make it for his mistake by buying her an expensive toy or electronic gadget. Thus, showering with expensive gifts normally has contrasting purpose which is against the basic tenet of love and affection.

To conclude, as mentioned above, showing care and appreciation is an emotional state and it can not be evaluated in money or other materialistic things , therefore, to show that we really care for someone it’s not necessary to buy them expensive gifts and only a genuine intention about how you feel should suffice.

Essay 13

University students should pay all the cost of their studies because university education benefits more than it benefits society as a whole. To what extend do you agree or disagree

Education is given special importance world over and almost, all the countries in the world try to impart education to as many citizens as it can. The rule followed is higher the better because of its obvious advantages. Since education is mostly subsidized to some extent by all nations, there is a debate as to whether students should pay the entire expenses or should it be offered at a reduced cost. In my view education should be offered at lesser cost because of it’s over all advantages to society.

First of all, cost of education is going up all the time keeping in tune with the increase in costs in general, therefore, many students who are brilliant in studies might find the cost prohibitive to pursue higher education. In my view such students deserve a chance to get higher education because they can offer so much to society, for example if a student from poor family gets free education and becomes a scientist and discovers something which helps mankind , he would have paid much more than he received. Therefore, such students must be helped.

Furthermore, students who receive quality education can offer a great competitive edge to a nation which can help creating so many employment opportunities. For example a student after taking higher education becomes an entrepreneur and thus offers jobs to so many people is a case of money well spent by the society. Hence we should encourage students with such strong potential.

To conclude my discussion I submit that education is important for all and it benefits society and individuals though measurement of exact amount of advantage is difficult. But considering the apparent advantages it offers we must continue to support students for higher education.

Essay 14

Children today are too dependent on computers and electronic entertainment. It would be better to encourage them to spend more time outside playing sports and games. Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give your opinion.

With the progress in science and our changed lifestyles in the recent past, we have been using more and more electronic gadgets and computers and as a result our dependency and usage is growing more on them. In this changed landscape of life children are no exception and they also have been using these items more and more. I agree that we should encourage children to spend more time playing outdoor sports and games as we will see in the foregoing paragraphs.

First of all increased dependence on computers and electronic items encourages inactivity and laziness amongst children , this makes them susceptible to different types of lifestyle related diseases such as Diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases etc. For example the recent rise of diabetes and obesity in young children has shown clear co-relation in reduced physical activity. Therefore, we must encourage children to play physical games.

Another argument in support of encouraging children for outdoor games is that it increases social interaction amongst them and helps in holistic growth of the children. Hence children learn to co-operate and thus become good members of the society eventually which benefits all humankind. For example when children play football, they learn to play as team, hence promoting co-operation. Thus encouraging children for outdoor games is good for society as well because it teaches them desirable characteristics of good society members.

The above mentioned discussion clearly shows that children must be motivated to play outdoor games and sports as not only this helps them in getting physically fit but is also beneficial for the society as a whole.

Essay 15

It is expected that there will be a higher proportion of old people than young people in the future in some countries. Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

The advances in medical science and other improvements such as abundance of food has resulted in increased lifespan of the humans in most parts of the world and on the other hand birth rate has declined in the past few dates. It has resulted in a situation where it is projected that in some countries there will be greater population of old people than young people. This essay will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this development.

First of all, on the positive note we can a learn a lot from the wisdom of elderly. Older people have wealth of experience and we can certainly build upon the knowledge and experience of older people and achieve higher levels of progress in all sectors of life for example research done by the older generation lays the ground map of growth for future generations and human race has always relied heavily on the wisdom and experience of elderly.

On the other hand, having large old population has its problems as well. One of the major problems is the decaying health of elderly, which means a country will need to invest significantly in the health care and this huge expense would put serious stress on its economy.

Another problem due to higher number of older people in the country is that there will be fewer people in the country with greater level of productivity. This will result in loss of efficiency and will adversely impact economy and overall earning power of its citizens and will also affect its competitiveness in the international environment.

From above discussion it is clear there are advantages and disadvantages of having older people in the country , I am of the view that in an ideal situation there should be an equilibrium between the young and old people in a country so that it could benefit from the experience of older generation while have effecieny and productivity of young people.

Sports are central to entertainment of our life and have been used as such since time immemorial. In the past when there were few means of entertainment , hunting as game was conceived and it did serve the purpose well of that time, however with the change in the time over years, it’s usefulness and purpose have diminished so much that in present day context , it is considered cruel to kill innocent animals for fun. I agree with the statement that hunting should not be permitted.

First of all, the purpose of hunting was to entertain, which might have made some sense when it was designed, but today there are far better means of entertainment than we had in the past, so the very basic purpose of this activity does not exist anymore, making in totally redundant in present day scenario. Therefore, hunting as game should not be permitted at all.

Secondly, when we kill some innocent animal for fun, it’s goes against the whole humanity not just that poor animal because it inculcates that sense of barbarism, which has no place in the society we live in. We always preach that we should live peacefully and stop wars which cause horrendous pains to humans all over the world and hunting is totally against the premise. Therefore, we should not support hunting at any cost.

To summarise, hunting as a means of entrainment may have had it relevancy in the past, but in the present world it has no place and should be condemned.

Why should a person who is good at kicking or hitting ball or someone who could dance or act well , make more money in few days than a doctor who helps to battle disease and cure people, a fireman who pulls people from burning buildings, a policeman who stops a crazed gunman from going on a killing spree do in several years? This questions is debated all over the world and lets discuss this question in the following paragraphs.

Though it is true that their performance affects the lives of millions of people - yes, people can get upset, but there are no real world ramifications that drastically change the lives of millions if a sports team wins or loses or if any film star’s movie bombs at the box office. However, a scientist who manages to predict the spread of the next major disease and prevents it from reaching pandemic level would not get the same kind of financial recognition. The same is true for the person who manages to cure cancer is paid quite well, but compared to footballers who make £200,000 per week is an insult to intellect. It is unfortunate that things work this way and in my opinion in a fair society sport would be entirely amateur and every athlete would have a day job and actually commit something useful to society

On the other another opinion is that sports persons and movie starts do not get paid too much money because they work out very hard everyday for fans to watch them play or act their heart out while in some jobs all you do is sit in an office with a pen with no physical effort what so ever. The stress these celebrities have to bear is huge for example dislocated shoulder, finger, broken bone etc. but yet they continue to do it. They also have kids and family members or even friends that they use this money to support.

Moreover their income earning time span is also less, most of the celebrities can earn money only for a decade or so, therefore, the money that they earn is justified.

In my opinion whatever reasons we may try to put in justification of payment of huge sums to celebrities, it’s still does not support the view that they should be paid so high while people who offer absolutely essential service to society are paid as low as they get paid at present.

Essay 17

Some people think that our behaviour, customs and traditions are no longer relevant, and have to change due to the influence of modern ways of life. Do you agree or disagree? Include any relevant examples in your response.

Humankind has progressed rapidly in all walks of life especially science in the past few decades and because of this our lifestyle and social values have also changed. In this changed social phenomena our many traditions and customs have lost meaning but in my opinion there are some benefits of traditional customs and behavior as well , hence this issues should discussed from different view points before reaching any conclusion.

The customs and traditions help us preserve identity and uniqueness of a culture and this is important so that we have diversity in the human race for example if everyone started wearing jeans and discard all other traditional form of clothing, it will be too boring and our future generations will also totally forget about our beautiful costumes and glorious past. Hence traditions are important to keep us connected with our past.

On the other hand, since we have changed so much in the recent times that certain rituals and behavior are no longer relevant and it’s a good idea not to follow them for example tradition of animal sacrifice which continued since time immemorial is not acceptable in the modern world. Therefore, the traditions which do not serve us well should not be followed at all.

It is therefore, clear from the above discussion that traditions and our behavior have advantages and disadvantages as well and in my opinion to follow them blindly or to simply reject all of the is not ideal solution, instead we should carefully evaluate the traditions in the light of our knowledge and requirements of present time and follow the ones that are still beneficial to us while rejecting the others.

Essay 18

Some people believe that a vertical city in which people work and live in tall buildings is a good idea. Others say that horizontal living is better. Discuss both views and express your opinion.

Population growth on our planet has necessitated the requirement for more living space for humans and this has put pressure on the limited supply of available land and consequently it is increasingly becoming scarce. Hence, there is a debate as to whether its more desirable to live in tall buildings to save space or should we utilize the land in traditional manner i.e. horizontally. In my view, considering the requirements of present day living and future, we should choose vertical living in order to save space for the future generations and to meet their requirements.

First of all living in tall buildings is the modern day necessity because we are increasingly moving towards urbanization resulting in more concentration of population in cities. This metropolitan culture is the result of increasing population and employment opportunities available in cities. Furthermore, since this trend is likely to continue, we should prefer tall buildings as it will help in saving space for our future needs.

Furthermore, horizontal expansion of urban space is not desirable because it consumes the precious resource of land thus putting pressure on entire eco system in the form of reduced agricultural land and pollution for example if cities just keep on expanding horizontally we would not be left with any land for agriculture and it also increases travel time because typically businesses are situated in one particular area of city hence horizontal cities increase travel time greatly as well resulting in more vehicular pollution.

To summarize, it is quite clear that vertical buildings in cities has many advantages in the form of land saving, less deforestation and pollution , therefore, in my opinion is more appropriate in present day context and should definitely be preferred over horizontal living.

In today’s world it is private companies rather than governments who pay for and carry out most scientific research. Do the advantages outweigh any disadvantages?

For betterment of human race scientific research in necessary and now a days private companies as well as governments carry scientific research , government generally has no financial agenda while private companies are profit driven, thus fuelling the argument that whether research done by corporations is actually has more advantages. In my opinion role of government and industry should be inclusive rather than competing with each other.

The government is usually too occupied with its many agendas and is also mostly short of funds for scientific research, this is a particularly true of developing nation such as ours, for example our government is overwhelmed with lots of problems of basic necessities such as providing clean water& health care etc., therefore it becomes a particularly challenging task to allocate funds for scientific research because it seems like a gamble and has no immediate tangible benefits.

The end result is neglect of scientific research and potential long term loss of the scientific reward which could have translated itself in a huge payoff, had the funds been allocated to scientific research by government. Obviously in above situation private research is a better choice.

However, the approach of relying solely on private companies is also flawed because private companies carry out research driven solely by the profit motive. Furthermore, they may also ignore research areas, which though vital to society, have little commercial application or have negative profit and expense bias. Therefore, vital areas in need of research would be neglected hence, government has to do scientific research in such areas.

Therefore, to conclude I would suggest of having a balanced approach where both government and private companies should collectively work and support scientific research for the benefit of its nationals and the human race.
